Open Scope: Current situation in Austria – cords, cables and sockets are covered by the regulations for waste electrical and electronic equipment
As in Germany, other European countries also have to introduce the Open Scope with new categories, in accordance with the WEEE Directive 2012/19/EC. Since the implementation varies from one EU country to the next, manufacturers of electrical equipment should find out in good time the current situation in the respective countries in which they operate.
In Austria, clothing and furniture fitted with electrical features will also have to comply with the law as of 15th August 2018. Another change is that smartcards and electronic door openers will also have to comply with the law from this year on. In Germany, these products are already within the scope of the ElektroG.
Attention: In contrast to Germany, the following products also have to be registered in Austria as of 15th August 2018:
Cables (bulk stock)
Plugs
Sockets
Multiple socket extension leads (with or without switching functionality)
Jacks
Electrical connectors
The authority in charge, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism, has published a list for the allocation of equipment. This lists the products that are covered by the law in Austria. Companies should check their portfolios now and see whether they need to register. You are welcome to contact us if you need help registering.
